What they are, how they impact your health, and practical steps to test and remediate them.

When You’ve Cleaned Up Everything Else… But Still Don’t Feel Well

You’ve optimized your diet. You’ve detoxed your home. You’ve swapped plastics for glass, filtering your water, and installed air purifiers.

And yet—you still can’t sleep. Your anxiety spikes at night. Your hormones feel off, and your energy crashes mid-day.

For many patients, the missing piece is something they can’t see, smell, or taste—but their bodies can feel it: EMFs (electromagnetic fields).

What Are EMFs, and Why Do They Matter?

Electromagnetic fields are invisible energy fields produced by electricity, wireless signals, and modern electronics. While we are all exposed daily, research shows EMFs can alter biological processes, from hormone production to nervous system function, particularly in those with chronic illness or heightened sensitivity (1).

Unlike chemical toxins, EMFs don’t accumulate in tissues—but they continuously interact with our cells. They can induce oxidative stress, alter calcium signaling, and activate the nervous system’s fight-or-flight response (2). Over time, this persistent stress load can worsen preexisting conditions and block healing.

The Four Types of EMFs You Need to Know

Understanding the four categories of EMFs is key to identifying, testing, and reducing exposures. Each type interacts with the body differently—and requires specific approaches to manage.

1. Magnetic Fields

Magnetic fields are generated by current running through wiring, transformers, or large appliances. They are measured in milligauss (mG).

Why they matter:

  • Studies have linked chronic exposure to elevated magnetic fields with increased risk of childhood leukemia and neurological effects (3).
  • Unlike other EMFs, magnetic fields cannot be fully shielded. Avoidance and relocation are often the only solutions.

Common sources:

  • Wiring errors in walls
  • Refrigerator compressors
  • Power lines or transformer boxes

Practical tip: When house-hunting, use a Gauss meter to identify high magnetic fields before committing to a property. Usually the best place to look is at the front of the house where the water lines enter the house.  The electrical lines often come in to the house along a similar path and magnetic EMFs are generated.

2. Electric Fields

Electric fields are created by voltage in wires—even if a device is turned off. They are measured in volts per meter (V/m).

Why they matter:

  • They induce currents in the body, especially during sleep, when we are most vulnerable to repair and regeneration (4).
  • They can interfere with melatonin production and sleep quality.

Common sources:

  • Plugged in lamps and chargers near the bed. Electronic alarm clocks.
  • Non-grounded outlets
  • Household wiring that runs behind headboards

Practical tip: Installing “kill”  switches that completely turn off the electrical power to the outlets at the head of the bed is the best.  If that isn’t feasible simply unplugging devices at night can dramatically reduce electric field exposure, but it may not lower them entirely. This is often the biggest source of EMF in the bedroom.  You can use a body voltage meter which is inexpensive to measure.  Be aware as you are at the electrical panel and trying to turn off the electrical current to the bedroom, you may discover nearby rooms may also lose power, depending on the electrical configuration of the house.  Be sure that your bedroom and kitchen appliances are NOT on the same switch!

3. Radiofrequency (RF)

Radiofrequency fields are emitted by wireless devices: WiFi, Bluetooth, smart meters, and cell towers.  These are the ones everyone thinks about when they think about EMFs!

Why they matter:

  • RF exposure is the most common modern EMF.
  • Studies suggest RF can increase oxidative stress, damage sperm quality, alter glucose metabolism in the brain, and worsen sleep (5,6).
  • The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified RF fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

Common sources:

  • WiFi routers and boosters
  • Bluetooth headphones and wearables
  • Cell phones (especially when carried in pockets or bras)

Practical tip: Turn off WiFi at night and keep phones in airplane mode when not in use. Distance is your friend!  The further the device, the weaker the field.  NEVER put  your phone in your bra or in your pocket unless they are in airplane mode.

4. Dirty Electricity

Dirty electricity refers to high-frequency voltage spikes that “ride” on household wiring due to modern electronics and dimmer switches.

Why it matters:

  • It creates biologically active electrical noise that has been associated with headaches, sleep disturbances, and fatigue (7).
  • Some studies suggest dirty electricity may exacerbate diabetes and neurological symptoms.

Common sources:

  • Computers and switching power supplies
  • LED lights and dimmer switches
  • Solar panel inverters

Practical tip: Plug-in filters (like Greenwave or Stetzer filters) can reduce dirty electricity in specific circuits.  You will need to get a Stetzer meter in order to measure and you do this by simply plugging the meter into an outlet.  Then you place Stetzer or Greenwave filters around the room and watch how the dirty electricity declines on the meter!  You will have to add meters to every room to lower the dirty EMF in places where you spend time.

How EMFs Affect Your Body

Emerging research suggests EMFs influence multiple body systems simultaneously:

  • Sleep: EMFs disrupt melatonin, the hormone that regulates circadian rhythm (8).
  • Mood and anxiety: EMFs activate the sympathetic nervous system, increasing stress hormones (9).
  • Hormones: Oxidative stress and endocrine disruption can impair thyroid, reproductive, and adrenal health.
  • Cellular health: EMFs increase reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to DNA damage and impaired mitochondrial function (10).

For sensitive individuals—especially those with Lyme disease, mold illness, MCAS, or POTS—this added stress can trigger symptom flares, worsen insomnia, and make healing feel impossible.

How to Test for EMFs

To truly understand your exposure, you’ll need to test for each type:

  • Gauss meter → Magnetic fields
  • Volt meter → Electric fields
  • RF meter → Wireless signals
  • Dirty electricity meter (e.g., Stetzer Meter) → Electrical noise on circuits

For a comprehensive assessment, consider hiring a certified Building Biologist (find one at createhealthyhomes.com or https://buildingbiologyinstitute.org/).

Practical Steps to Reduce EMFs

  • Magnetic fields: These really can’t be mediated, so please check a potential home before moving in. If you find elevated magnetic fields, you may need to move to the back of the house away from the fields.
  • Electric fields:  Move beds away from major appliances, breaker panels, or transformer boxes. Avoid living near high-voltage power lines.   Use grounded shielding fabrics or shielding paints, unplug devices at night, and install “kill”  switches to shut off the electrical power to certain outlets.
  • RF fields: Prefer wired connections for computers and phones. Turn off WiFi at night. Keep phones on airplane mode whenever possible.
  • Dirty electricity: Use plug-in filters and upgrade wiring when necessary.

Small changes often add up. Many patients report better sleep, calmer moods, and improved energy after making simple adjustments.

Why This Matters for Healing

From a whole-person lens, EMFs are part of your body’s terrain—the total environment shaping health. Addressing EMFs isn’t about fear; it’s about creating conditions where your nervous system can rest and your cells can repair.

For many patients at The Spring Center, EMF remediation has been the missing key that allows other therapies—detox, antimicrobials, nervous system retraining—to finally work.

Creating a Safer Space for Your Body to Heal

If you’ve been doing everything right and still feel stuck, EMFs may be the hidden factor. By understanding the four types, testing strategically, and making targeted changes, you can dramatically reduce your body’s hidden stress load—and create an environment where healing becomes possible.

At The Spring Center, we don’t just look at labs—we look at your entire environment. From mold to EMFs to nervous system patterns, our team identifies and addresses the factors most conventional medicine overlooks.

If you’re ready to explore what’s been holding you back, schedule care at The Spring Center and take the first step toward clarity and healing.

Summary

EMFs are invisible but powerful stressors that can disrupt sleep, mood, hormones, and healing. This blog breaks down the four types of EMFs—magnetic, electric, radiofrequency, and dirty electricity—and shows how to test, reduce, and remediate exposure. By creating a safer environment, you can support your body’s natural resilience and recovery.
