Why symptoms are not malfunctions, but biological signals that reveal the path toward coherence, safety, and transformation.

Your Body Is Not Working Against You

Most people arrive at The Spring Center with a long list of symptoms.

Fatigue. Brain fog. Anxiety. Digestive distress. Skin rashes. Migraines. Joint pain. Sleep disruption. Palpitations. Hormonal swings. Chemical sensitivity. A sense that their body is unpredictable or unreliable.

They come carrying the belief that something is wrong inside them. That their body is malfunctioning or weak or breaking down. Some feel betrayed by their symptoms. Others feel afraid of them. Many feel disconnected from their bodies because the signals feel too chaotic or intense to understand.

But here is what I tell patients.  Your body is not against you.  Your body is the messenger.

Symptoms are not malfunctions. They are communication.

When the body cannot speak through alignment or ease, it speaks through discomfort.

When the body isn’t heard through whispers, it raises its voice.

When the body cannot guide gently, it uses symptoms as a form of intelligence.

This perspective is not poetic.  It is physiological.

The body contains multiple systems of communication that reveal when something is out of balance. These include inflammatory pathways, hormonal rhythms, autonomic patterns, mitochondrial output, and microbiome signaling. When these systems are disrupted by stress, trauma, toxins, infections, or emotional suppression, symptoms appear as a biological attempt to restore regulation.

Symptoms are the map back to yourself, but this is not yet being talked about in functional medicine.  We are venturing into a new and fascinating territory where profound, deep and lasting healing happens.

If you are sick and tired or feeling sick and tired, of seemingly playing whack-a-mole with your ever changing symptoms.  If you are done with struggling to find the right protocol, the magic supplement or the answer, please keep reading.

Why Symptoms Appear When They Do

Symptoms often feel random, but nothing inside the nervous system happens without meaning.

Every symptom has a physiology behind it. And that physiology has a message.

When the nervous system perceives threat, whether physical or emotional, the body enters a state of protection that shifts energy allocation and cellular communication. The sympathetic nervous system activates, cortisol rises, and inflammatory signaling increases. These shifts suppress digestion, alter detoxification, tighten musculature, and disrupt circadian rhythms (1)(2).

In this state, the body cannot regulate efficiently.

Signals become louder, and then louder.

Processes that once felt automatic require more effort.

Symptoms arise not as errors but as indicators that something requires attention.

Research shows that chronic stress alters mitochondrial metabolism, increases oxidative stress, and changes immune activation in ways that mimic illness or toxin exposure (3). This means that many symptoms people attribute to external causes may actually be the internal effects of prolonged survival physiology.

The body creates symptoms to reorient you.

To show you where energy is blocked.

To guide you toward what needs to be addressed.

To remind you that something has been unattended.

Symptoms are not random.

They are purposeful.

The Nervous System as the Interpreter of Experience

The nervous system determines how you perceive your body.

It decides what feels safe and what feels threatening.

It shapes how strongly you react to experiences, foods, environments, and even memories.

When the nervous system is regulated, symptoms tend to be quieter and the body recovers quickly. When the nervous system is dysregulated, symptoms amplify, multiply, and linger.

This is why two people with the same exposure or trigger can have dramatically different reactions.

The variable is not the trigger.

It is the state of the nervous system.

The vagus nerve plays a central role in this process. It modulates inflammatory responses, supports digestion, influences heart rate variability, and communicates with the immune system (4). When vagal tone is strong, the nervous system is resilient, then the body experiences stressors as manageable and recovers efficiently. When vagal tone is depleted, the nervous system is dysregulated, the same stressor can create inflammation, anxiety, pain, or fatigue.

Low vagal tone has been associated with worsened inflammatory markers, digestive dysfunction, pain sensitivity, and impaired recovery from stress (5). In this state, symptoms become louder because the body is trying to regain homeostasis with fewer resources.

This is not failure.  You are not doing anything wrong.

This is communication and an invitation to reframe your perspective.  Rather than seeing the body as having a mind of its own that is against you, recognize that your body is intimately and intricately connected to your soul, your spirit, your mind, your beliefs, your will and your energy.  Your body is a part of you.  It is not all of you, but it is the megaphone of your spirit.

And when the symptoms are loud, your body is signaling change and reframing and then nervous system regulation is needed before deeper healing can occur.

Microglia, Neuroinflammation, and the Meaning Behind Symptoms

Neuroinflammation is one of the most overlooked contributors to symptoms. Microglia, the immune cells of the brain, activate in response to stress, infection, toxins, and emotional trauma. When microglia are repeatedly activated, they become “primed,” meaning they respond with greater intensity even to minor stimuli (6).

Primed microglia affect cognition, mood, motivation, sensory processing, and pain thresholds.

Patients often experience this as:

  • brain fog
  • anxiety
  • irritability
  • depression
  • hypersensitivity
  • sleep disruption
  • migraines
  • overwhelm from minimal stimuli

This pattern is frequently misunderstood as psychological.
It is biological.

Neuroinflammation alters how the brain interprets signals from the body. It can make normal sensations feel threatening or overwhelming. It can heighten emotional reactivity. It can create symptoms that mimic chronic illness.

When someone tells me they feel like they are “falling apart,” what is often happening is that their microglia are firing aggressively. Their symptoms are signs that their brain is trying to reduce exposure to stimuli that it perceives as dangerous.

When you understand this physiology, symptoms become less frightening and more instructive.

They show you where the nervous system needs nourishment.

They show you where inflammation is unresolved.

They show you how the brain has been protecting you.

Symptoms reveal where healing must begin.

The Role of Mast Cells in Symptom Expression

Mast cells are sentinel immune cells that respond to stress as strongly as they respond to allergens. They release histamine and other inflammatory mediators that influence the skin, gut, sinuses, brain, and cardiovascular system.

Chronic stress and trauma activate mast cells, just as much as mold, bartonella an other environmental toxin triggers, which is why many patients with high stress burdens develop histamine intolerance, hives, flushing, digestive issues, or sudden food reactions. Research shows that corticotropin releasing hormone, released during stress, directly stimulates mast cells to release inflammatory signals (7).

This means symptoms like flushing, itching, swelling, or digestive distress are often the body’s attempt to protect you from the perceived danger.  Mast cells activate when the system feels overwhelmed. When the nervous system returns to safety, mast cells naturally calm.

Symptoms are physiological reflections of perceived threat.

They point to the places where the body needs reassurance, nourishment, and regulation, and likely where emotions need to be expressed.  See my previous blog, Are You Detoxing or Dissociating? How to Spot Spiritual Bypass in the Healing Journey.”

Symptoms Are Not Asking You to Fix Them. They Are Asking You to Understand Them.

One of the greatest misunderstandings in medicine is the assumption that symptoms are problems to be eliminated. This leads to protocols that suppress signals, quiet reactions, and override discomfort without addressing the underlying cause.

Suppressing symptoms can create temporary relief, but it often prolongs healing because the root imbalance remains unexamined.  This is not to say that we shouldn’t provide temporary relief.  I find this step critically important.  When the signals are so loud that functioning in life is impeded or sometimes even impossible, we must quiet the symptoms in order to provide you with more bandwidth to do the necessary inner work.

And once the symptoms are manageable and you are ready to deeply listen, you will find that your symptoms carry information.

Fatigue may be asking for restoration rather than stimulation.

Anxiety may be asking for grounding rather than avoidance.

Pain may be asking for stabilization or emotional release.

Digestive symptoms may be asking for slower eating and parasympathetic activation.

Skin eruptions may be asking for detox pathways to be supported gently, not aggressively.

Brain fog may be asking for inflammation to be reduced or sleep to be repaired.

Symptoms are directional.

They tell you where to look.

They tell you where the healing must start.

The body does not communicate through language. It can’t!

It communicates through sensation.

When those sensations are misinterpreted as failure, the healing journey becomes harder.

When they are understood as guidance, the healing journey gains clarity.

A Patient Story: When Symptoms Became the Map Instead of the Enemy

This is a composite story built from many similar cases at The Spring Center.

I will call her Camila.

Camila was a forty five year old woman who arrived at my clinic with severe fatigue, joint pain, bloating, and persistent migraines. She had tried elimination diets, detox protocols, massage, acupuncture, supplements, meditation, and various forms of psychotherapy. Each intervention helped briefly, then her symptoms returned.

She interpreted this as personal failure. She believed her body was betraying her or that she was missing the right treatment.

Her labs revealed dysbiosis, elevated inflammatory markers, mild mast cell activation, and disrupted cortisol rhythm. But the most striking finding was her autonomic pattern. She couldn’t sleep.  Her nervous system was in persistent sympathetic activation. Her mast cells were activated.  She was stuck in fight-flight-freeze.  Her vagal tone was low. Her heart rate variability on her Oura ring was poor.

Her symptoms were not random. They were the result of a body trying to cope with years of pushing, pressure, emotional contraction, and unresolved stress.

We approached her healing differently.

Instead of focusing on eliminating her symptoms, we focused on understanding them. Fatigue became a signal that her mitochondria were operating in defense mode, not producing energy efficiently. Joint pain became a sign of low grade inflammation combined with mast cell activation. Migraines were linked to neuroinflammation and sympathetic overdrive. Bloating reflected poor motility caused by low vagal tone.

Each symptom pointed to a system needing support.

As we stabilized mast cells, reduced neuroinflammation, supported digestion, renewed her vagal tone and reintroduced somatic practices to help her reconnect with her internal state, her symptoms gradually softened.

Her body did not heal because she forced it.

Her body healed because she finally listened.

Her symptoms revealed the map of her healing trajectory the entire time.

Symptoms and The Unforgetting Project: The Body as Messenger, Not Malfunction

Within The Unforgetting Project, symptoms are explored as part of a deeper communication system. They reveal where the body holds tension, emotional residue, energetic constriction, or unprocessed experience. Symptoms show the places where past events still influence present physiology.

We may start with metaphors, analogies from traditional chinese medicine or the chakra systems if those resonate for you but, your body’s symptoms are not vague metaphors. They are expressions of lived experiences coming forward to be experienced, explored and healed. Trauma research shows that emotional experiences alter autonomic patterns, inflammatory responses, and hormonal rhythms (8). These physiological shifts create symptoms that often persist long after the event.

The Unforgetting perspective helps people see that symptoms arise when the body is trying to return to coherence. They appear when the nervous system is attempting to reorganize and when the internal landscape needs attention or integration.

Symptoms are invitations.

They invite awareness.

They invite presence.

They invite truth.

They point toward what needs to be remembered, released, or reclaimed.

The body keeps the score, and it also holds the map.

The Physiology of Insight

There is a profound relationship between insight and physiology. When someone recognizes the deeper meaning behind a symptom, the nervous system shifts. The vagus nerve responds to clarity. The limbic system calms. The amygdala reduces its vigilance. Inflammatory signaling decreases.

Studies show that emotional awareness increases parasympathetic regulation and reduces cardiovascular and inflammatory stress markers (9)(10). Insight is not abstract. It alters the biology of healing.

This is why people often experience a reduction in their symptoms when they gain clarity about their emotional or relational patterns. The body responds to truth.

When symptoms are understood, the body relaxes.

When symptoms are resisted, the body contracts. When the body contracts, the symptoms persist or even escalate.

Healing follows the path of least internal resistance.

How to Begin Listening to Your Symptoms

Listening to symptoms does not mean analyzing them obsessively. It means becoming curious about what the body is trying to express.

This can begin with simple questions:

Where do I feel sensations in my body? Focus on the sensation and avoid the judgement.  Is a part of the body cold or warm, tender or constricted?

What does the sensation need?  What emotion accompanies the sensation? Is it sadness, anger, rage, shame, grief?  Allow those emotions to come forward.

What was happening before it started?

What part of me is this symptom protecting?

What truth is trying to surface?

The goal is not to eliminate the symptom immediately.

The goal is to understand its communication.

When you listen to your symptoms rather than fight them, the healing process becomes more direct. You discover the underlying drivers rather than chasing the surface.

Your body already knows how to heal.

It only needs you to understand its signals.

Your Symptoms Are Guiding You Toward Wholeness

Healing does not happen by overpowering symptoms. It happens by interpreting them. The body communicates through discomfort when ease is not available. It is not punishing you. It is guiding you. It is asking you to slow down, to pay attention, to reconnect with the truth inside you.

Your symptoms are not the obstacles.

They are the instruction manual.

They are showing you how to come back into coherence.

How to restore safety.

How to return to the body you left behind when life required too much.

You are not broken.

You are being asked to listen.

Summary

Symptoms are not malfunctions. They are physiological messages that reveal where the body needs support, regulation, or emotional integration. Neuroinflammation, mast cell activation, autonomic imbalance, and chronic stress all shape how symptoms appear. When understood through the lens of The Unforgetting Project, symptoms become a map toward wholeness rather than a list of problems to eliminate. Healing begins when you listen.
